Dr. Susan Hingle Installed As AMWA President, Committed to Changing the Culture of Medicine

The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) announces the 2024-2025 Board of Directors incoming leadership with outsized excitement for the insights and opportunity to increase the organization's visibility in support of our mission to advance women physicians, achieve equity in the workplace, and foster access to quality healthcare.

Susan Thompson Hingle, MD, became AMWA President, having served on the Board of Directors for the past several years. Dr. Hingle is committed to advancing women in medicine, changing the culture of medicine, and assuring that women physicians thrive.

As contributor to the AMWA/Korn Ferry Women in Medicine report, Women in Medicine: Setting the Agenda for Change, Co-chair for AMWA's 2022 Annual Meeting, and senior author on the ACP policy paper on gender equity in physician compensation and career advancement, Dr. Hingle strongly believes that we must focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as physician well-being and fulfillment, if we are going to be able to reach our full potential as individuals, organizations, and as a profession.

"I am so excited to lead AMWA as I believe we can arrive at time where women physicians not only achieve equity but, most importantly, are afforded the opportunity to reach their full potential. It is only when this happens that we will reach our full potential as an organization, profession, and society," says Susan Hingle, MD, Professor of Medicine, Associate Dean of Human & Organizational Potential, and Chair of Medical Humanities at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. "I aim to guide this organization toward this goal in the coming year."

Dr. Hingle is joined by Eileen Barrett, MD, MPH, as President-Elect. Dr. Barrett is former chair of AMWA Advocacy. Her research and scholarly work are in the areas of clinician wellbeing, health equity, and improving the care of people with substance use disorders.

"I decided to run for President-Elect so that I could continue to meaningfully engage AMWA's leadership to advance the careers and professional wellbeing of women in medicine," says Dr. Barrett, associate professor of medicine and director of continuing medical education at the University of New Mexico."I look forward to embracing opportunities for positive change while respecting our foundation of advocating for gender and health equity and fostering fulfilling medical careers for women in all healthcare settings."

AMWA welcomes four incoming board members who each begin a two-year term as of the 109th AMWA Annual Meeting:
