Noble World Foundation Proposes UN Security Council Reform to Foster Global Peace

By: PRLog

CHICAGO - Dec. 5, 2023 - PRLog -- Noble World Foundation (NWF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to global peace, announced today an initiative to reform the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). With the aim of creating a more democratic and effective UNSC,  NWF proposes granting membership and veto power to regional unions instead of individual states.

The NWF's proposal is detailed in the article "The Urgent Need for UNSC Reform: A Path to Global Peace," which is posted on its official website, nobleworld.org.

The urgency of such reform is emphasized by Russia's veto on February 25, 2022, blocking a UNSC resolution against its Ukraine attacks. Despite receiving ten "yes" votes, the single "no" vote from Russia was enough to quash the resolution (4 abstained: Brazil, China, Gabon, and India). Is this truly democratic? This is unacceptable to conscience-driven individuals worldwide. Such an incident illustrates the limitations of the UNSC when the interests of one nation clash with global concerns.

In contrast, the European Union (EU) has a remarkable track record in conflict prevention.

The UNSC already follows a regional representation policy for selecting non-permanent members, divided into five distinct regions. It is only logical that this regional representation policy extends to the selection of permanent members as well. After all, upholding international peace and security is a shared endeavor for both permanent and non-permanent UNSC members.

Shiv R. Jhawar, founder of NWF, notes, "The news media can be a powerful ally in the structural reform of the UNSC, providing valuable media coverage about its importance and benefits."

It is crucial to have a news media free from government interference. Reporters need the freedom to investigate and report without fear, acting as watchdogs on government activities and leadership decisions.

If a regional union like the EU existed in Eastern Europe before the Russia-Ukraine crisis, it could have potentially prevented the conflict by using regional consensus instead of single-nation veto. To improve the UNSC's ability to prevent future wars, decision-making authority should be given to a regional union modeled after the EU, rather than allowing one nation to have veto power.

NWF urges political leaders to recognize the potential of regional unions in conflict prevention and support their UNSC membership, as unified regions and a unified world can ultimately end wars. Wars strip away human dignity and reveal the worst side of humanity. Even animals do not kill members of their own species; for example, lions do not kill other lions. Only humans kill other human beings. This needs to change.
