Second Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officer Joins Artefact Heritage Team

Sydney,Australia - August 19, 2022 /PressCable/

Sydney based Artefact Heritage Services confirmed in an exclusive interview with Eleven Media that they now have two Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officers on their team

=Artefact Heritage Services is based in New South Wales and for over 11 years has been a leading provider of heritage management and archaeological services in the region. They provide a broad range of services for both Aboriginal and historical cultural heritage management and archaeology. The heritage team are highly experienced, industry recognised specialists who ensure unique and effective outcomes are achieved each and every time.

Artefact Heritage has developed a new Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officer role for the business and employed its first two Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officers for the expanding Aboriginal Archaeology team. The Officers are team members who do not have formal university qualifications in archaeology, but who by virtue of their identity and cultural heritage experience should be at the centre of the Aboriginal cultural heritage assessment system.

The role of the two new officers will include deepening engagement with local Aboriginal communities and Local Aboriginal Land Councils and advising on heritage and archaeological matters. Beyond this, and in an effort to address inherent inequities in the Heritage management system, the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officers will receive training in how to perform site work, assessments and reporting to comply with government legislation. First reactions by RAPs has been highly positive to these efforts, and Artefact heritage’s internal team has also benefitted greatly from the increased cultural insights brought to the team.

‘I am pleased to be able to bring my traditional knowledge of lore and cultural protocols to the Artefact team.’ said Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officer Phillip Obah

Artefact Heritage Services have over 11 years of experience and a network of community contacts across New South Wales, Artefact is renowned for their careful, considerate, and comprehensive work in Aboriginal archaeology.

They have proven ability to work across large and complex project areas, and within numerous layers of legislation, regulations, and guidelines. Their team also consistently consults with local Aboriginal knowledge holders, and regularly complete their fieldwork in partnership with Registered Aboriginal Parties and Native Title holders.

Sandra Wallace, Managing Director at Artefact, said this when interviewed by Eleven Media, “We are delighted to confirm that we now have two full time Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officers (ACHO) in our Aboriginal Archaeology Unit. It is unusual to have two ACHO’s in a team but shows the commitment we have in providing the highest quality of consultancy possible in the Aboriginal heritage management work we do.”

The skills that Artefact Heritage Services have include researching, locating, surveying, assessing, and documenting Aboriginal sites. They also excel at systematic excavation and meticulous analysis of any Aboriginal artefacts that are recovered. Artefact has demonstrated expertise in accurate sensitivity mapping of Aboriginal sites and places and can deliver GIS files in formats that integrate with your systems.
