The SR Socially Relevant™ Film Festival NY ninth edition awards ceremony took place on Sunday March 20 at the Tenri Cultural Institute in the West Village, New York City, where twenty six awards were given out to talented filmmakers, and actors.
NEW YORK - March 21, 2022 - PRLog -- SR Socially Relevant™ Film Festival, NY SRFF2022 - The in-person section of the ninth edition wrapped on Sunday, March 20th with an awards night where twenty-six special prizes were given. The awards categories range from Best Narrative Feature to Documentary Feature and included narrative short, documentary short, lockdown, animation, and web series films. The award trophy is a special silk scarf designed by Lost Pattern, presented in its unique box, an SR Socially Relevant Film Festival winner certificate, and bag. The event took place at the Tenri Cultural Institue in the West Village and culminated with a prosecco reception in the presence of the local and international film directors, the jury, the festival team, VIP, and sponsors.
Below is the list of the awards and winners:
- The Vanya Exerjian Award - Empowering Women and Girls, is the special SRFF award named in memory of founder Nora Armani's cousin, who was a victim of a hate crime. It is given to a female director from the official selection. This year the Vanya award is given to Mariam Avetisyan, for her film The Desire To Live - Documentary Feature | Armenia | 90 min.
- The Best Narrative Feature award is an ExAequo between two feature films, Poppy - by Linda Niccol | New Zealand | 95 min, and Road To The Lemon Grove, by Dale Hildebrand | Canada | 89min.
- The Best Documentary Feature award recipient is Others Before Self by Seth McClellan | United States | 54 min.
- The festival's special Ingenuity Award was given to three films for making, as Director Nora Armani put it, something with "three times nothing" (a direct translation of the French trois fois rien expression which refers to something costing next to nothing). The recipients of this award are: My Yang Gang Diary - Documentary Feature by Ching Juhl | United States | 90min, Hospital - Daughter's Mother - Narrative Feature Film by Rax Rinnekangas | Finland | 86min, and Messy - Web Series - Directed by Nicole Ansari, Written and created by Kate Warren | USA | 40 min.
- The Best Narrative Short Film Award winner is To Wade or to Row by Rebecca Van Der Meulen who also won The WFCC (Women Film Critics Circle) Award.
- The Best Documentary Short Film Award winner is Storgetnya directed by Hovig Hagopian.
- The Best Lockdown Film Award winner is Surfaces by Steve Reeves.
- The Best Animation Film Award winner is The Chemical Factory directed by Drew Leung.
- The Best Script is Maria Isabella Silvalessa written by Hunter Ridgway.
The five films won the IndiePix Vision Award by SR Film Festival Industry partner IndiePix Unlimited, are Let's Do This Differently (doc) by Annette Ernst | Germany, Nomad Meets the City (doc) by Anji Sauvé Clubb | Mongolia, A Handful of Water by Jack Zapf | Germany, The River You Step in by Jon Michaelson | Canada, Raise your Hand by Jessica Rae | USA.
Last, but not least, the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards in the Narrative Feature category are given to Charly Chiarelli for Road to the Lemon Grove, and Libby Hunsdale for Poppy, while best actor and best actress awards in the Narrative Short Film category are awarded to Amani Kojo for Off the Beat, and in ExAequo to Cristiana Raggi and Tor Clark for The Load and Asylum respectively.

In these difficult times, the wonderful films made by these dedicated filmmakers offer us the added bonus of learning about the human condition." Said Festival Founding Artistic Director Nora Armani.

SRFF was founded by Actress/ Filmmaker Nora Armani in 2013 as a response to the proliferation of violence in media and entertainment. SRFF believes in the power of film in raising awareness of social issues and promoting positive social change. During its first nine editions, SRFF has showcased 614 films from 39 countries.
