Periodontist Dr. Edward Segal Uses Three Different Lasers in Chicago-Area Practice

By: PRLog

NORTHBROOK, Ill. - March 10, 2022 - PRLog -- Dr. Edward Segal, a periodontist in Northbrook, IL, regularly uses three different types of lasers to perform procedures with no scalpels and no sutures.  The result is more precise treatment, a more comfortable experience for the patient, and faster healing.

"I introduced laser dentistry into my office in 2009," Dr. Segal said.  "Over the years, as the technology has advanced, I've added two more laser systems to benefit patients."

Dr. Segal's explained that his choice of laser depends on the procedure.  "I use a Biolase® laser that allows minimally invasive surgery to treat gum disease.  The laser destroys the infected tissue and bacteria in the gum pocket, and it leaves healthy tissue unharmed.  It also gives me the opportunity to stimulate bone growth.  These procedures include LANAP®, which stands for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure."

In his periodontal practice, Dr. Segal also regularly places dental implants.  He cleans and disinfects a dental implant with a Waterlase laser, because this device allows him to treat both hard and soft tissue without damaging the implant.  "The Waterlase also allows me to clean in small spaces on the tooth surface and on the bone that manual instruments or simple rotary instruments cannot reach."

In addition, Dr. Segal especially likes the Waterlase for simple crown lengthening procedures.  These procedures remove excess tissue and bone to reveal more of the tooth structure.  The result is improved esthetics in one visit.

The third type is a diode laser.  Dr. Segal uses this laser to disinfect periodontal pockets during cleanings and help destroy bacteria that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to access.  "The key to preventing a recurrence of periodontal disease after treatment is thorough cleanings," Dr. Segal explained.  "The diode laser takes this process to a new level."

When asked how patients respond to laser treatment, Dr. Segal said that he regularly receives very positive feedback.  "Patients are always interested in treatment that is faster, easier, less invasive, and more comfortable," he said.  "They really appreciate the high-tech approach, and they know that I have a long and successful track record with laser dentistry."

When asked about the future of laser dentistry, Dr. Segal said that "more dentists are using their first laser, and over time, I expect that more will incorporate multiple lasers into their practices."

While laser can be used by general dentists and other specialists, Dr. Segal noted the specialty of periodontics is well suited to laser treatment.  "As a periodontist, I treat periodontal disease, replace missing bone, perform cosmetic procedures, and place dental implants.  I use all three lasers in my practice to treat patients—sometimes more than one laser for a particular treatment.  I cannot imagine practicing without laser technology."

Dr. Segal is accepting new patients.  He may be contacted through his website, www.perioonline.com.
