“On the Edge of the Known World: Prayer and PTSD” - Trauma as Teacher

By: WebWire

All life experiences have the power to transform. Some shape our lives. Some even change how we think about ourselves. Trauma shakes up our world and impacts the way we think about ourselves and our place in the world. Trauma is transformative.

Author Karen Ander Francis was nearly killed in a car crash and spent months in rehabilitation and recovery. During those nine long months she continued to write in her journal, a lifelong practice that included chronicling and recording events, as well as reflecting on them to discover insights and lessons. However, after the accident she found it impossible to reflect, to muse, even to pray during the long recovery process.

In “On the Edge of the Known World,”  Francis dives deep into her journal and plumbs her reminiscences to find the meaning that remained hidden at first, but became visible with hindsight. Her Christian faith provided words and images, Light that sustained her during the dark times. The book emerges as a series of reflections on how to stay awake in life situations, not only learning from them, but finding new meaning.
