AWPPW Reaffirms Commitment to Garten Trucking Employees as Advocacy Continues into 2025

By: PRLog

COVINGTON, Va. - Jan. 22, 2025 - PRLog -- The Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers (AWPPW) is entering 2025 with renewed determination to represent the hardworking employees of Garten Trucking. Building on the momentum of successful union meetings held in December 2024, AWPPW is committed to securing fair treatment, better wages, and improved benefits for these employees, who play a critical role in supporting essential industries in the region.

"These meetings set the foundation for an important year ahead," said Brad Monroe, AWPPW Area Representative. "In 2025, we remain resolute in ensuring that Garten Trucking employees receive the representation they deserve, despite ongoing challenges."

Garten Trucking is a key transportation provider for WestRock, a significant employer of AWPPW members. The company's services, including the transportation of goods and materials to and from WestRock facilities, underscore its critical role in supporting the operations of AWPPW-represented workers. However, AWPPW continues to challenge Garten Trucking's resistance to union recognition. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) recognized the AWPPW as the official bargaining representative for Garten Trucking employees retroactive to June 30, 2021 (case no. 24-1571 and 24-1614), but the company's ongoing appeals highlight its reluctance to honor this decision. Most recently, the Board issued a conclusion respectfully requesting that the Court deny the Company's (Garten) petition for review and enforce the Board's Order in full.

"Our priority remains clear: we stand with the employees of Garten Trucking," said Josh Estes, AWPPW Spokesperson. "Their contributions are invaluable, and they deserve to have their rights respected and upheld. As the company continues its appeal of the NLRB's decision, we call on the community to hold them accountable for their commitment to the workers they rely on."

The union's key priorities for 2025 include:

  • Strengthening Advocacy: Continuing to fight for the enforcement of the NLRB decision and ensuring Garten Trucking employees' rights are fully recognized.
  • Promoting Workers' Rights: Educating employees about their rights under the National Labor Relations Act and equipping them to assert these rights.
  • Community Engagement: Encouraging local businesses, organizations, and residents to support Garten Trucking employees in their fight for fair representation.

Scott Tift, General President of AWPPW, emphasized the need for community solidarity: "These workers are integral to our region's economic fabric. By standing with them, we not only support their fight for fair treatment but also strengthen the foundation of our entire community."

AWPPW plans to maintain open communication with Garten Trucking employees and the public throughout the year, with regular updates, events, and educational sessions. This effort reflects the union's steadfast commitment to ensuring no worker stands alone in the face of injustice.
