The lawsuit stems from CenterPoint Energy’s inadequate preparation and response to Hurricane Beryl on July 8th. CenterPoint relied on inaccurate out-of-town weather reports and failed to position linemen in Houston before the hurricane. Consequently, 25,000 customers remain without power.
Business owners have suffered significant losses due to this negligence. Items such as injectables, Botox, flowers, food for catering, and herbal medicines have spoiled. Surgeries were canceled, causing doctors to work overtime and cover costs out of their own pockets. Business insurance covers only up to $10,000 in losses, while some clients have incurred several hundred thousand dollars in damages.
The lawsuit highlights CenterPoint Energy’s history of inadequate responses, dating back to Winter Storm Uri in 2021. Despite having 3.5 years to address these issues, CenterPoint has failed to make necessary improvements, resulting in ongoing significant financial harm to Houston businesses.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has condemned CenterPoint Energy’s actions and initiated an investigation. This lawsuit aims to hold CenterPoint Energy accountable and force the company to take the necessary actions to prevent future negligence.
