Jarvis Vision Center Announces Community-Wide Eclipse Viewing Party on April 8th

Murray, Kentucky -

Murray, KY (3/18/2024) — Jarvis Vision Center has announced that they are hosting a viewing party for the upcoming full solar eclipse on April 8th. Located at 1806 North 4th Street, Murray, KY 42071, their staff is excited to invite the public to come see the rare, once-in-a-generation event. The viewing party will take place at their practice from 1-3 PM, CDT. Jarvis Vision Center will also have a limited supply of eclipse glasses to share with attendees who want to participate but don’t have their own.

“We want to invite the entire community to participate with us,” said founder and head optometrist Dr. Reed Jarvis. “This is an exciting event that affects everyone, and we want to share it with anyone in Murray and the surrounding area who would like to take part. That is why we are throwing a party and providing a service back to the community that has done so much for us. Opportunities like these don’t come around often.”

While partial eclipses are occasionally available, the next full solar eclipse won’t occur until August 23rd, 2044 — twenty years from now. What makes full solar eclipses special is that viewers can see the Sun’s corona, or its outer atmosphere, which is normally too bright to see. There is some danger to viewing an eclipse, even with protective eyewear, which is why it can be handy to have eye specialists nearby to ensure people can safely make the most of the experience.

“The entire Jarvis Vision Center staff is excited for this eclipse!” said Dr. Jarvis. “We are all big science enthusiasts, and it is rare to have something like this that is so heavily vision-related to share with the public. We want to share this awe-inspiring with people who attend, and as a bonus, use our expertise as eye doctors to prevent attendees from suffering serious damage to their eyes.”

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, temporarily blocking the sunlight. Not all parts of the Earth will experience the full extent of the eclipse, either. The eclipse has a “path” it follows, which is defined by the parts of the Earth where the moon passes directly above the viewer’s position. Part of what makes this event so rare is that the eclipse’s path will pass directly through western Kentucky.

The eclipse will peak between 1:58 PM and 2:01 PM CDT, so the event will fall directly in the center of the viewing party. People are encouraged to bring their own eclipse glasses, because while Jarvis will have some on hand, they cannot guarantee that there will be enough for everyone.

“The facts surrounding this eclipse are amazing,” said Dr. Jarvis. “By the time the moon’s shadow reaches us, it will be traveling roughly 1,900 miles per hour. This could be one of the most amazing celestial events we will witness for years, and we’re thrilled to share it with the people of Murray.”

Jarvis Vision Center is currently answering questions about the upcoming eclipse viewing party and taking new patients. Patients with questions or seeking an appointment should call (270) 512-8388.
