New UN report rebuts unrealistic "sex work" narrative by linking it to abuse of power and sexual demand.

United for Human Rights has been campaigning against human trafficking for more than twenty years. Continuing their efforts to expose the problems caused by trafficking, the group is praising a new UN report from Reem Alsalem, the special rapporteur on violence against women and girls.
In Alsalem’s report she declines to use the term “sex work” noting that it “wrongly depicts prostitution as an activity as worthy and dignified as any other work; it fails to take into account the serious human rights violations that characterize the prostitution system and ‘gaslights’ victims and their experiences.”
The special rapporteur’s report is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which proclaims that “all human beings are born equal in dignity and rights.”
It also aligns with the 1949 Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others, which the UN approved on 2 December 1949. The preamble of that document states, “Whereas prostitution and the accompanying evil of the traffic in persons for the purpose of prostitution are incompatible with the dignity and worth of the human person….”
The new report from the special rapporteur reviews various legal frameworks around prostitution by characterizing regulation and decriminalization approaches as based on the premise that prostitution is inevitable. However, research across 150 countries show that prostitution increases when it is legalized or decriminalized. It also showed that legalization leads to higher rates of sex trafficking, violence, and rape.
Alsalem’s research promotes the “Nordic” model, which United for Human Rights has also urged adoption of. Under this model prostituted persons are decriminalized and recognized as victims of exploitation, while it criminalizes the buyers, pimps, and others who profit from the exploitation of women, girls, and boys. Countries that have adopted this approach have seen reduction in violence against women.
The special rapporteur’s report was based on input from more than 300 stakeholders and 86 experts and women with lived experiences from across all continents.
Human trafficking is a $150 billion a year industry according to Forbes. The Global Slavery Index in 2021 estimated 50 million people were trapped in modern day slavery.
United for Human Rights promotes the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights which includes “No Slavery” as one of the rights covered by the declaration.
United for Human Rights and the US Institute for Diplomacy and Human Rights just co-sponsored training on the various forms of human trafficking and what can be done about them. The training helped attendees to become antislavery advocates themselves.
