Virginia Tech Fosters Future Landscape Architects Through Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery Collaboration

By: Get News

Lovettsville, VA - Virginia Tech’s School of Design, Landscape Architecture Program, has launched an innovative community collaboration with the Global Humanities Foundation’s Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery. Located on a picturesque 10-acre property at 13967 Berlin Turnpike, Lovettsville, VA, the collaboration will merge environmental stewardship, cultural enrichment, and community engagement.

Under the guidance of Professor Terry Clements, FASLA, FCELA, PLA, Chair of the Landscape Architecture Program, the project reflects the program’s mission to address real-world challenges through immersive design labs, community outreach, and cutting-edge research. The initiative is designed to provide students with the professional skills needed to tackle environmental and societal issues while creating a dynamic, community-focused cultural space.

On a rare warm December day, Virginia Tech’s team, including Professor Clements, Dr. Vincenzo Cribari, Visiting Assistant Professor from Italy, and Ms. Jia Xu, a visiting scholar from China, conducted their first site visit to the Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery. The team met with Tset Wong and Rose Hong, founders of the Global Humanities Foundation & Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery, along with Angela Clark and Richard Haney, founders of Farm & Fish For Life, to officially launch the collaboration.

Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery is envisioned to become one of the largest sculpture gardens in the nation’s capital region where the beauty of art and the elegance of fine wine come together. Nestled in a serene and picturesque setting in the nation’s Capital Wine Country, Loudoun County, its gardens will feature an exquisite collection of artworks and sculptures from both the United States and around the globe and provide a place for community members.

The Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery will feature a diverse range of themed garden spaces, including:

  • Community Vegetable Garden and Orchards
  • Italian Renaissance and Persian Gardens
  • French and Mediterranean Gardens
  • Christmas Farm
  • Chinese Ming Dynasty Rock or Scholar Garden & Japanese Zen Garden/Bonsai Pavilion
  • Children’s Garden / Harmony Music Garden
  • Culinary and Healing Garden
  • Winery & Apiculture (Beekeeping)

These diverse gardens are all dedicated to promoting peace, harmony, and humanity. Its curated collections showcase the works of award-winning artists who have been recognized at top art shows and festivals worldwide.

In January 2025, twenty-seven (27) Virginia Tech Landscape Architecture students will begin the design process as part of this hands-on community engagement and experiential learning project. Their final designs will be eligible for entry into regional and national landscape design competitions.

Located in Loudoun County, one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, the Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery provides a unique setting for blending cultural heritage, artistic expression, and ecological innovation.
