A Poetry Event Focused on Emerging Student Writers

Poetry Night at The Barnacle will feature selected poetry written and read by students from Miami-Dade high schools and members of the entire Miami-Dade community. Student poems submitted will also be posted throughout the park. Poets who submit poetry for consideration can attend the event free of charge with up to five family members and friends. First-, second- and third-place bookstore gift-card prizes, generously donated by Books & Books Literary Foundation, will be awarded to students. Non student winners will receive a free one-year family membership in The Barnacle Society and a Barnacle “swag bag.” To submit poetry to be considered for reading or posting at Poetry Night at The Barnacle, and to see all submission guidelines, timelines and other details, please click here. Submissions will be closed after March 15.

“This will be a wonderful event to support young writers and get poetry out in front of people in interesting ways,” said Richard Blanco, Miami-Dade’s first poet laureate and the inaugural poet for President Obama’s second inauguration.

“We gave a lot of thought to what kind of poetry event this should be,” said Marc Stone, The Barnacle Society’s director in charge of producing the event, who is also TradeStation’s Chief Legal Officer and himself a published poet and short fiction writer. “We decided to focus it on the students—after all, these are our emerging poets and writers, and this experience should be priceless for them. TradeStation’s sponsorship of the event speaks to its commitment to our local communities and the importance of supporting students’ creative growth.”

Miami-Dade high schools that plan to participate in Poetry Night include Belen Jesuit Preparatory Academy, Carrollton Upper School, Christopher Columbus High, Coral Gables Senior High, Coral Reef High, Gulliver Prep Upper School, International Studies Preparatory Academy, Miami Beach Senior High, Miami Palmetto Senior High, Miami Senior High, Palmer Trinity Upper School, Ransom Everglades Upper School, Riviera Preparatory School, and Young Women’s Preparatory Academy.

Celebrated Miami Poet, Ricardo Pau-Llosa, to Be a Featured Reader

Poetry Night at The Barnacle will also feature a reading by renowned Miami poet, Ricardo Pau-Llosa. Pau-Llosa, born in Havana, fled Cuba with his family to the U.S. in 1960 when he was six years old. A graduate of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, Pau-Llosa's first poetry collection, Sorting Metaphors (Anhinga Press, 1983), was selected by William Stafford as the first recipient of the Anhinga Poetry Prize. Pau-Llosa's third book of poetry, Cuba (1993), was the 100th title in the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University Press Poetry Series. The CMUP has since published six other books of his, including Fleeing Actium (2023), The Turning (2018), Man (2014), and Parable Hunter (2008).
