Celebrating a Milestone: Engineering Tomorrow Reaches 1 Million Students

Organization continues exponential growth after engaging 572,000 students during the 2023-24 school year

Engineering Tomorrow, a public charity dedicated to inspiring high school students to pursue a path in engineering, today announced it has engaged 1 million students through its nationwide STEM labs, led by experienced engineers and funded by corporate partners at no cost to schools. The organization, founded in 2014, provides industry-relevant learning and mentorship opportunities to high school students, with the aim of creating a larger, more diverse engineering workforce equipped to tackle the global engineering challenges of the future.

The impact of reaching 1 million students is significant, as 24% of students who have engaged in Engineering Tomorrow’s programming report enrolling in an engineering major in college, compared to 6.9% of students nationally. Additionally, Engineering Tomorrow is focused on reaching communities traditionally underrepresented in engineering careers to inspire students who may not have otherwise considered or have access to an engineering path.

Megan Barrett, Executive Director of Engineering Tomorrow, said, “This exciting milestone underscores the demand from both our industry partners to expand their workforce pipelines, as well as from educators seeking to provide real-world applications and career paths for STEM education. This achievement is a credit to everyone who has contributed to our journey at Engineering Tomorrow and to the dedication of our founder, Bill Woodburn. I look forward to further expanding our platform and inspiring more students to pursue this rewarding and globally critical career path.”

Since Engineering Tomorrow’s founding, high school students across the country have completed more than 2.5 million individual labs free of cost. The organization has transformed into a national, digital-first organization capable of delivering life-changing educational experiences to hundreds of thousands of students per year. In the 2023-2024 school year alone, Engineering Tomorrow delivered four times as many lab kits to students than any previous year, engaging over 572,000 students at more than 3,600 schools. It now partners with leading organizations and individuals in both the private and public sector to provide relevant and inspirational lab content to students. Recent labs have included speakers from organizations like CRISPR Therapeutics, Engineers Without Borders, General Motors, NASA, Texas Instruments, and Siri.

Bill Woodburn, Founder and Chairman of the Board, added, “As talent gaps in engineering have grown increasingly urgent, our sector-targeted labs are bolstering our nation’s engineering workforce. I am thankful for all the hard work of our staff and volunteer network in evolving our platform to meet rising demand, as well as the support of our partners in enabling us to provide our programming 100% free of cost.”

Engineering Tomorrow is offering its standard virtual labs and 17 live Lab Event Days for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year. High school teachers can visit engineeringtomorrow.org to learn more and sign up to bring Engineering Tomorrow programming to their classrooms.
