Chethan Sathya, MD, MSc, a pediatric trauma surgeon at Northwell’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center and director of Northwell’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention, will be featured in a special fireside chat moderated by The Washington Post health columnist Dr. Leana Wen. Taking place on the Sky Stage on Tuesday, October 10 at 2:50 p.m. EST, the conversation will center around the shocking fact that guns are now the leading cause of death for U.S. children and teens. Gun violence must be addressed as a public health crisis and Dr. Sathya will outline evidence-based interventions and collaborations needed to build a safer society for future generations.

During the “Healthcare, Policy and Advocacy Walk into a Bar” panel on Tuesday, October 10 at 2 p.m. EST at the Sky Stage, Northwell’s Eric Cioè-Peña, MD, MPH, vice president and founding director of Northwell’s Center for Global Health, along with other panelists, will dig into the actions that need to be taken to create tangible policy changes that address health disparities across the globe. Weeding through financial concerns, politics and lack of public awareness often associated with public health crises, Dr. Cioè-Peña will weigh in on how to best ensure meaningful change.

On Monday, October 9 at 5:10 p.m. EST on the Sun Stage, Dawnette Lewis, MD, MPH, OB-GYN, maternal-fetal medicine expert and director of Northwell’s Center for Maternal Health, will join the panel titled “A Crisis We Cannot Overlook: Medicaid and Moms.” The maternal mortality crisis, particularly in the Back community, is at its peak. Despite studies that show Medicaid expansion is associated with lower maternal mortality rates, many states are not adopting a proven solution. Dr. Lewis will share her insights and on-the-ground experiences on navigating the growing disparities and solutions that can be deployed now.

“Northwell Health is rooted in purpose with a mission to address the most pressing health issues facing the communities we serve, including global public health, gun violence and Black maternal health,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell. “Drs. Cioè-Peña, Lewis and Sathya are leaders in their fields who advocate for powerful change to improve the health and wellness of our society as a whole.”
