Visiting Angels Franchise Owner Receives Prestigious Honor from Alzheimer's Association

Personal Connection Drives Doug Hammond's Efforts to Support Alzheimer's Patients

BRYN MAWR, PA / ACCESSWIRE / July 1, 2024 / Visiting Angels, the nation's leading provider of in-home senior care, is proud to celebrate the special honor Michigan franchise owner Doug Hammond has received from the Alzheimer's Association Michigan Chapter. The 2024 Advocate of the Year award recognizes Hammond, independent owner and operator of Visiting Angels Great Lakes Bay Region, for advocacy efforts for Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers.

Hammond's passion for volunteering with the Alzheimer's Association is deeply personal. His mother, Karen Martin, was a nurse when she opened the Visiting Angels Great Lakes Bay Region office nearly 25 years ago. In 2017, Martin was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and passed away three years later.

"I don't volunteer to earn awards. I do it for my mom, my family, and all the families we care for," said Hammond. "We have a long way to go with improving Alzheimer's care and finding a cure, but seeing things happen, such as increased research funding and a dementia unit in Michigan, is why I keep doing this. I know I'm making my mom proud."

In his 13 years of volunteering with the Alzheimer's Association, Hammond has participated in the annual Saginaw Walk to End Alzheimer's, held countless district meetings, traveled to Lansing and Washington, D.C. multiple times to meet with legislators, and testified before the Michigan State Legislature.

"We're proud of Doug and his tireless efforts to advocate for those battling this terrible disease," said Larry Meigs, CEO of Visiting Angels. "Not only is he continuing his mother's legacy but also making a significant impact on the lives of countless families affected by Alzheimer's."

Visiting Angels has more than 600 locations that provide compassionate Alzheimer's and dementia care to seniors. Dedicated caregivers perform a variety of tasks, including housekeeping, medication reminders, and hygiene assistance to help seniors age at home and offer peace of mind to their families.
