Innovative builder and real estate enterprise begins construction for permanent supportive housing development at 3552 Whittier Boulevard in Boyle Heights

Suffolk, one of the most innovative and successful builders and real estate enterprises in the country, today announced it has broken ground on a 41,000 square-foot, four-story, supportive housing development in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights. The project is located at 3552 Whittier Boulevard and is being built in collaboration with Mercy Housing California, a leading national affordable housing nonprofit. Completion is anticipated by August 2023.

Developed by Mercy Housing and designed by Abode Communities, the four-story building will consist of 63 permanent supportive housing studio apartment homes for individuals who have previously experienced homelessness, along with a management unit. Residents will have access to common areas and amenities, including on-site property management offices, permanent supportive housing services, community lounge, community laundry room, community kitchen, and outdoor hardscaped and landscaped areas.

The project is the second of five supportive housing developments to be produced utilizing the City of Los Angeles’ $40 million HHH Innovation Challenge Award bestowed to developer collaborative Mercy Housing California, Abode Communities, and LA Family Housing. Mercy Housing secured the site with the intent to create a replicable and scalable model to reduce cost and save time utilizing prefabricated modular design and construction. The innovative process allows for the foundational elements of the building to be completed on-site while the individual housing units are manufactured off-site by Factory OS. This technique streamlines the build process by decreasing manufacturing waste, reducing costs and minimizing project timing.

Suffolk is collaborating closely with Mercy Housing to ease the affordable housing shortage with multiple construction projects across the state. In addition to 3552 Whittier Boulevard, Suffolk has worked with Mercy Housing on other affordable housing projects, including 6th Street Place in downtown Los Angeles 7th and Brannan in San Francisco. These projects have added hundreds of units to their respective communities.
