What It Looks Like Firsthand to Overcome Childhood Trauma

What It Looks Like Firsthand to Overcome Childhood Trauma
CHICAGO, Ill., -- Kharis Publishing today announces the release of “Agonizing Peace” (ISBN: 978-1637461952) by Jon Heymann, Powering Through Traumatic Experiences.

Jacksonville, Florida - “I was adopted from a slave mill. It took two years before I would let any adult hug me.” Put through what’s called a “breadbox” – an opening that looks like an over-sized mail slot, Jon Heymann was unwanted and abandoned at the Athens Municipal Infants Asylum. It was here that he faced horrific treatment and all but forgotten by the outside world when a doctor signed his “death certificate.”

Heymann faced abuse, trauma, and abandonment. He was sold, rented, or loaned to adults that occupied a wretched little house. He was sent out to steal from tourists. If he failed to bring back enough money, he was beaten or thrown out a window. Through a miracle, he was adopted by an American family, brought to the U.S., and struggled with nightmares for many years. He shares his journey in Agonizing Peace: Powering through traumatic experiences.

Today he is a successful businessman who served as a pastor and earned graduate degrees in psychology and education. “My birthplace was a cesspool of poverty, prostitutes, and prophets of every ilk.” Heymann has an appreciation for the greatness of America and believes most people have no idea how bad it can be elsewhere until they have lived through it. “My sense of patriotism is stronger today than when I was ten years old.”

Where was God in all the trauma? He says the Bible never promises an easy life, a painless life, a life of comfort and ease. These ideas are part of a false gospel. “Affliction levels us all. Rich, poor, educated, illiterate all meet the same level playing field when affliction strikes.”  Sadly, he observes, “We are being spoon-fed that happiness is just a purchase away.” The life of our Lord was anything but “effortless peace.”

If you're not sure where God is during the tough times, or whether He even cares, you're not alone. Are you lacking peace in your life while you walk through a traumatic experience? You’re not alone. Discover the path to regain and retain real peace with God, with others, and with yourself amid tragedy. Powering through difficult times is tough, but not impossible. If we knew everything about God, he wouldn’t be much of a god, but we know enough about him to trust him, to know that he loves us, to reduce our anxieties, and regain our peace.

Heymann doesn’t stay anchored to the trauma he faced early in life. Instead, he’s found numerous ways to give back to the poor, children, and the less fortunate. “Peace comes through surrender” he says. Instead, we have the mistaken notion that peace comes through an easy life. That’s not what Christ modeled and it’s not what most Christ-follower will experience.
